Look around the room carefully when you visit a lawyer's office to interview them

Look around the room carefully when you visit a lawyer's office to interview them. Does he or she have the books on their bookshelf in alphabetical order. Do they have a messy desk full of papers? Is his briefcase put away? Remember, you get billed for all the time it will take them to find your files.

make sure you speak with more than a single lawyer prior to making your choice. The first one you speak with may seem just perfect, but how do you know that until you have other options to consider! See at least one more, preferably two so that you can be sure you are making a smart choice.

Never sign blank checks or retainer fees that are presented to you by a lawyer. When you do this, you are not agreeing to any sum of money. Instead, you are completely trusting that your lawyer will spend whatever money is necessary for winning your case. Although you want to hire a lawyer you trust, you should not put this much trust into anyone you work with. Instead, agree to set fees so that you know how much money you will spend.
