Don't hire the first lawyer that you meet. You should meet with a number of lawyers to get an idea of how they operate. This is the only way that you will find one you are comfortable with. Don't ever settle for a lawyer that doesn't make you feel comfortable or you'll regret it.
Make sure to discuss payment with any attorney you are thinking about using. Some are paid by the hour and others may charge you a fixed rate. Think ahead of time about what you are most comfortable with (or if it even really matters to you). Talk the lawyer about your preferences and see if they would be willing to work with you.
Discuss your attorney's educational background. This shouldn't be the only factor, but it's an important one. If they went to a hard school, it shows they had the drive to work hard and get their degree. A good lawyer could have gone to a mediocre law school, but that should be something you know when you are making choices.
Never just randomly pick a lawyer out of a phone book or directory to work on your case. Since you do not know anything about a lawyer using this method, you could end up with someone who is incompetent or inexperienced. You could ask loved ones if they know of a lawyer who can help or look at online reviews.
