If you don't feel comfortable, do not hire that lawyer.

If you don't feel comfortable, do not hire that lawyer. This is true of their fee arrangement, too. Never sign a blank check for their retainer! Talk to them about an estimate to ensure you stay on budget.

Do not make the mistake of believing that an older lawyer automatically knows more than a lawyer that is a bit younger. Someone may have been in practice longer, but that does not mean that they automatically have experience in the area of law that pertains to your case.

Don't give a retainer over without great forethought. If you have to pay a retainer, make sure you will get some of your money back in case the lawyer does not use all the funds available. Ask around, since many lawyers will take a small one and then bill you for the difference.

If you need legal help, don't necessarily use the lawyer you have worked with in the past. You may need a particular type of attorney, someone who specializes in the type of case you are involved in. Don't worry, though. A specialist isn't necessarily expensive, so you should be able to afford what you need.
